When the single-phase alternating current is passed into the single-phase stator windings, a pulsating magnetic field will be generated in the stator which changes sinusoidal with time but does not move in space. The analysis shows that the alternating pulsating magnetic field can be decomposed into two rotating magnetic fields which turn opposite, so that the positive and negative torques are equal when the motor is at rest, the starting torque is zero, and the motor cannot start by itself.
