How To Use Marine Floating Mooring Buoys Correctly

It’s important to use floating mooring buoys correctly to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the mooring system, as well as protect your vessel and the vessels of others. Mooring buoys are usually fixed on the ground chain, and the ground chain is fixed on the seabed with heavy objects or anchors. The mooring buoy is strong, easy to handle, maintenance-free and resistant to UV and freezing.

• The number of buoys is limited, first come first served.
• Maneuver the boat from the helm station so that you can see the buoy throughout the connection.
• Approach slowly from downwind or upstream, making the floating yellow pickup line closest to you. Place the buoy on the same side of the helm station so that you can see it when you approach.
• Pass the bow line of your bow through the loop of the yellow pickup line. Tie both ends of the bow line to the bow. Do not tie the yellow connection line directly to the ship as it will cause excessive pressure on the mooring anchor. Do not forcibly moor the buoy, as this will pose a danger to you and your hull, and will cause unnecessary stress on the mooring system.
• Release enough line so that the buoy is not pulled underwater and the line is level. Bad days may require more rows. Adding an extra rope will provide a more comfortable experience when your ship is anchored and reduce the wear and tear of the buoy system.
• Check the buoys tied to your boat; you are responsible for your boat. Check if it is stored as expected and report the problem to any shelter.
• When you are ready to leave, loosen the bow line of the bow and pull it through the loop of the yellow pickup line. Then stay away from the mooring lines so you don't get scale on any mooring lines.​

Additional Attention Points of Marine Floating Mooring Buoys

• At many reefs, marine floating mooring buoys encircle the shallowest reef areas or are located on the ocean side of the reef. Approach marine floating mooring buoys from around either side of these shallow areas, always steering to the outside of a ring of buoys. Never motor directly across a shallow reef to get to a buoy.
• You should maintain idle speed/no wake in the vicinity of the marine floating mooring buoys. Do not meander among the buoys and watch for swimmers, snorkelers, and diver bubbles.
• If there are no buoys available, anchor only in sand, never in coral. Always check to be sure that your anchor is not dragging and your anchor chain is not contacting coral.
• Encourage smaller ships to moor to each other, thereby allowing larger ships to enter the buoy.
• When the sailboat is on the buoy, it should not drop the large sail like a stable sail; this puts a lot of pressure on the bolts of the mooring ring.
• The buoy positions have been separated to provide clearance for most ships when moored under normal conditions. To avoid grounding, be careful when approaching or strapping to the buoy. Containers larger than average must be checked for depth to avoid contact with the bottom.
