The main advantage of vertical axis wind turbines compared to horizontal axis wind turbines is their insensitivity to wind direction and turbulence. As a result, vertical axis wind turbines can be installed closer to the ground, making them safer and cheaper to build and maintain. It still needs to get plenty of wind, though. The main disadvantage of vertical axis wind turbines is the inefficiency of dragging each blade back into the wind at each half rotation. Well positioned horizontal axis wind turbines are continuously driven by the wind after alignment and can be twice as efficient as ideally positioned vertical axis wind turbines. Nonetheless, the simplicity and variety of vertical axis wind turbines make reading interesting, as described below.

But testing the optimal arrangement of the turbines is a challenge. Field tests are the best, but they are expensive, time-consuming, and involve only a few turbines. Therefore, engineers and wind farm developers often use computer models to test turbine arrangements. However, the current model only considers the two-dimensional wind field and does not consider the vertical wind field around the VAWT.

So Craig designed and built a complex lab-scale model of the VAWT array to test the 3D wind field around the turbine. Her setup consists of 1,300 interconnected 1-inch gears topped with 300 cylinders in a 10-foot-long array. She installed the system in a sink in the university's fluid mechanics lab. The idea is that the cylinder simulates VAWT and the water flow approximates the wind.
