A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.

Wind turbines come in a variety of vertical and horizontal shaft types. The smallest turbines are used in applications such as charging auxiliary power sources for ships or caravans, or powering traffic warning signs. Slightly larger turbines can be used to power homes, while unused electricity is sold through the grid to utility providers. Large arrays of turbines known as wind farms are becoming an increasingly important source of renewable energy as part of strategies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in many countries. Compared with photovoltaics, hydropower, geothermal, coal and natural gas, wind energy has "the lowest relative greenhouse gas emissions, the lowest water demand and...the most favorable social impact".

Q1: Can I install a small wind turbine on my roof?

A1:  We strongly advise against installing turbines on roofs or buildings as they can only withstand weak turbulent winds. Several field trials have found that turbines installed on buildings perform poorly, producing only a fraction of the energy if installed in the right location.

Q2: Can I have a wind turbine in my backyard?

A2:  Most wind turbines are not small enough to fit in a backyard - because larger size means more energy, and a single blade can be longer than a football field. And, wind power is loud enough for neighbors to complain, even if the wind farm is miles away.

Q3: Do I need a permit to install a wind turbine?

A3:  The development of the first installation of any wind turbine will only be permitted if the property does not have an existing air source heat pump. Additional wind turbines or air source heat pumps within the same property require planning permission.
