Currently, the most commonly used wind turbines are HAWT or horizontal axis wind turbines. These turbines use airfoils (aerodynamic blades) that are attached to the rotor by being positioned upwind or downwind. They have two or three blades and operate at high speeds.
Current horizontal-axis wind turbines use aerodynamic lift to rotate each rotor blade, just like an airplane flies. Generally speaking, aerodynamic lift comes into play once exposed to the wind around the high and low sections of the blade. The pressure differential created between the top and bottom surfaces of the blade creates a force in the direction of the blade tip. A horizontal axis wind turbine circuit diagram is shown below.
