Once the wind blows, the wind turbine converts the kinetic energy of the wind movement into mechanical energy by rotating the rotor. Afterwards, the converted energy can be transmitted to the generator through the shaft and gear train. Furthermore, the generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy to generate electricity.
Wind flows on both sides of the airfoil blade, but flows faster on the upper surface of the airfoil, creating a low pressure area on the airfoil. The pressure difference between the top and bottom surfaces is in the range of aerodynamic lift.
Since the blades of a wind turbine are constrained to move in a plane centered on the hub, lift causes rotation around the hub. In addition to lift, drag perpendicular to the lift prevents the rotor from rotating.
The design of horizontal axis wind turbines mainly includes a high lift-to-drag ratio, especially the blades. Therefore, this ratio can be varied by blade length to optimize the output energy of the wind turbine at different wind speeds. The generator and rotor shafts are arranged in a box on top of the array.
