Large three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs), with blades positioned upwind of wind towers, generate the vast majority of the wind in the world today. The main rotor shafts and generators of these turbines are located at the top of the tower and must point into the wind. Small turbines are pointed by a simple wind vane, while larger turbines typically use a wind sensor coupled to a yaw system. Most have a gearbox that converts the slow rotation of the blades into a faster rotation better suited to drive a generator.
Some turbines use different types of generators, suitable for slower speed inputs. They do not require a gearbox and are called direct drive, which means they connect the rotor directly to the generator without a gearbox in between. While permanent magnet direct drive generators can be more expensive due to the need for rare earth materials, these gearless turbines are sometimes preferred over gearbox generators because they "eliminate gear boosters, which are susceptible to Significant cumulative fatigue torque loads, associated reliability issues, and the impact of maintenance costs.”
