Vertical axis wind turbine is a kind of wind turbine. Its main rotor shaft is set vertically, and the main components are located at the bottom of the turbine. This arrangement allows the generator and gearbox to be located close to the ground for easy service and maintenance. Vawts do not need to point to the wind, which eliminates the need for wind sensing and orientation mechanisms. The main disadvantages of the early design include the significant torque changes during each rotation and the huge bending moment on the blade.
The torque problem was solved by later design with providing helical torsion in the blades. VAWT tilts sideways and its axis is perpendicular to the air flow line, with similar functions. A more general term that includes this option is "horizontal axis wind turbine".
