Our example uses ABS for the part and PLA for the support. That’s because PLA can be removed by ultrasound leaving behind the undamaged ABS component. The cleaning bath chemistry is also important as it must be strong enough to work on the mold support without harming the part itself. Other support materials include water-soluble waxes or brittle thermoplastics that can be removed by water and a surfactant. The takeaway is that the more complex the shape the more important ultrasonic energy is for complete support removal.
That’s because ultrasonic cavitation, the implosion of millions of minute bubbles created by generator-powered transducers vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies, reaches all surfaces immersed in the solution. The implosions safely remove mold support compound without affecting the ABS part itself.

Cleaning Effect:
How To Clean With Digital Ultrasonic Machine?
There are a few steps to clean your 3D printed parts:
Remove your part from the build plate of your 3D printer. Do not clean it in IPA or any other solution. If needed, mechanically remove excess resin from 3D printed part.
Fill your ultrasonic cleaner with distilled or tap water. Distilled water will not leave residue while drying.
Add washing liquid “Fairy Platinum”. We suggest the following: 95% water and 5% detergent.
Preheat your ultrasonic cleaner up to 30°C temperature.
Clean your part for 10-15 minutes. Do not put your hands in water while cleaning!
If necessary, you can repeat cleaning cycle. For even better results, you can carefully use toothbrush to reach delicate parts of the model.
Wait for a few minutes for your part to dry and become fully black again and then post cure it under UV light.

Which Cleaning Solutions Should I Not Add to the Water?
Solutions that have low flash points should not be added. The cavitation process works by releasing energy, which is converted to heat and then to kinetic energy. As a result, high-temperature gradients are generated in the solutions. Using flammables, bleach, acids, or other such agents produces even higher temperature gradients that can be extremely risky. Here is a list of effective cleaning solutions:
· Alkaline Solutions: With a pH of 10 or higher, they are great for cleaning stainless steel, metals, zinc, tin, copper, and cast iron. Alkaline solutions also work well when cleaning ceramics, glass, and plastic materials.
· Acidic solutions: they have a pH of 5 or lower hence, more aggressive than alkaline solutions. As such, acidic solutions are used for cleaning specific materials, e.g., removing oxides from metals as long as the solution contains inhibitors that protect the base material.
· De-ionized water: it is great for cleaning all kinds of material-metals, plastics, rubber, glass, and fabrics.
· High Caustic solutions: these are special alkaline solutions used for removing waxes, heavy grease, and oils from steel, cast iron, and stainless steel.
