Plate heat exchanger is a high-efficiency heat exchanger composed of a series of stacked metal sheets with a certain corrugated shape. Thin rectangular channels are formed between various plates, and heat is exchanged through the plates. Plate heat exchanger is an ideal equipment for liquid-liquid and liquid-vapor heat exchange. It has the characteristics of high heat exchange efficiency, small heat loss, compact and lightweight structure, small footprint, wide application and long service life. Under the same pressure loss, its heat transfer coefficient is 3-5 times higher than that of tubular heat exchangers, its floor space is one-third that of tubular heat exchangers, and its heat recovery rate can be as high as more than 90%.

 

  1. Corrosive Environments: In applications where the plate heat exchanger will be exposed to corrosive fluids, such as seawater, acidic solutions, or chemicals, materials with high corrosion resistance are essential. Stainless steel, titanium, or nickel alloys (such as Inconel or Hastelloy) are often used for their excellent corrosion resistance properties.
  2. Food and Beverage Industry: In applications where the plate heat exchanger comes into contact with food products, beverages, or pharmaceutical solutions, materials that meet sanitary and hygiene standards are necessary. Stainless steel with a smooth surface finish, such as 316L stainless steel, is often used for its corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning.
  3. HVAC and General Industrial Use: For standard HVAC and general industrial applications, materials like stainless steel, carbon steel, and some coated or plated options may be suitable, depending on the specific operating conditions and budget considerations.
  4. Hygienic and Cleanability: In applications where cleanability and hygiene are critical, smooth, non-porous materials such as stainless steel are preferred. Additionally, some plate heat exchangers may have specialized surface treatments to enhance cleanability and prevent bacterial growth.

Production Process:

  • Material Selection: High-quality materials such as stainless steel, titanium, or nickel alloys are often chosen for their corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity.

    Cutting and Shaping: The selected material is cut into specific shapes and sizes using techniques such as laser cutting, water jet cutting, or stamping.

    Embossing: The plates may undergo embossing to create patterns that enhance turbulence and improve heat transfer efficiency.

    Cleaning and Surface Treatment: The plates are thoroughly cleaned to remove any impurities and then undergo surface treatments like passivation or coating to enhance durability and performance.

    Assembly: The plates are assembled into a heat exchanger unit, often with gaskets and frames, to form a complete heat exchanger.

    Quality Control: Throughout the production process, quality control measures are implemented to ensure the plates meet performance and safety standards.

The structural components of the plate heat exchanger: heat exchanger plates, gaskets, fixed compression plates, movable compression plates, guide rods, clamping studs and nuts, pillars, intermediate partitions, etc.​

  • Heat exchanger plate: a metal sheet pressed with corrugations, sealing grooves and corner holes, which is an important heat transfer element. Corrugations can enhance heat transfer, increase the strength and rigidity of thin plates, improve the pressure-bearing capacity of the heat exchanger, and promote turbulent flow of fluid on the heat exchange surface, reducing the formation of sediments and dirt.
  • Gasket: seal the periphery of the plate to prevent fluid from leaking outward, and seal part of the corner holes according to design requirements to allow hot and cold fluids to flow in their respective channels.
  • Fixed compression plate and movable compression plate: Generally made of carbon steel plate or stainless steel plate, the thickness is determined according to the pressure-bearing capacity to ensure that the heat exchange plates are sealed and evenly clamped. The fixed compression plate is fixed at the front end, and the movable compression plate is used in conjunction with it and can slide on the guide rod for easy installation, disassembly and maintenance.
  • Guide rod: fixed on the clamping plate and pillar, used for supporting and positioning the plate.
  • Intermediate partition plate: a plate that divides a plate heat exchanger into two or more heat exchange sections. For heat exchange of more than three fluids, the plate bundle on the same frame can be divided into two or several sections, and each section can provide heat exchange for two fluids respectively. When there are only two fluids exchanging heat, no intermediate partition is needed.
  • Clamping studs and nuts: evenly arranged around the compression plate, used to clamp the plate between the fixed compression plate and the movable compression plate.
  • Pillar: supports the weight of the plate heat exchanger and integrates the entire heat exchanger.
