Working principle:
Nickel iron furnaces mainly use electrical energy to convert into thermal energy to heat furnace materials. In the furnace, the high temperature of the furnace charge is achieved by arc discharge generated between the electrode and the furnace charge, or by using current to generate heat through a resistor. The nickel ore, reducing agents (such as coke, coal, etc.), and fluxes (such as limestone, dolomite, etc.) in the furnace charge undergo a series of complex physical and chemical reactions at high temperatures. The nickel oxide in nickel ore is reduced to metallic nickel by a reducing agent, while forming nickel iron alloys with other elements such as iron. Due to the different densities of nickel iron alloy and slag, they will stratify in the furnace, thus achieving the separation of nickel iron and slag.
Structural composition:
Furnace body: Generally made of steel plate shell, lined with multiple layers of refractory materials inside to withstand high temperature and slag erosion. The shape of the furnace body is mostly circular or elliptical, with different specifications and capacities to meet the needs of different production scales.
Electrode system: including electrodes, electrode holders, and electrode lifting devices. Electrodes are usually made of high-purity graphite electrodes or self baking electrodes, which are fixed by electrode holders and connected to a power source. The electrode lifting device can automatically adjust the electrode position according to the reaction situation inside the furnace and the height of the furnace material, ensuring stable arc and uniform heating.
Feeding system: used to add nickel ore, reducing agent, flux, etc. into the furnace in a certain proportion. This system usually consists of a silo, feeder, conveying pipeline, etc., which can achieve precise batching and continuous feeding, ensuring the stable progress of reactions in the furnace.
Iron outlet and slag outlet: The iron outlet is located on one side of the bottom of the furnace and is used to discharge the melted nickel iron alloy. The position of the slag outlet is relatively high, and the slag should be discharged before tapping. Both the iron outlet and slag outlet are equipped with specialized opening and closing devices to control the discharge of nickel iron and slag.
Smoke exhaust system: installed on the top or side of the furnace, used to exhaust the smoke generated during the smelting process. The flue gas contains harmful substances such as dust and sulfur dioxide, which need to be purified through cooling, dust removal, desulfurization and other treatments before being discharged in compliance with standards.
Technical Parameter:
Electric furnace power: The power range of nickel iron furnaces is relatively wide, with small electric furnaces having a power of several thousand kilowatts and large electric furnaces having a power of tens of thousands of kilowatts. The power level depends on factors such as production scale, nickel ore grade, and product quality requirements.
Working temperature: The general working temperature is around 1400-1600 ℃. High temperature is conducive to the reduction reaction of nickel ore and the good separation of nickel iron alloy and slag, but the specific temperature needs to be adjusted according to the composition of the furnace charge and process requirements.
Electrode current density: Electrode current density is one of the important parameters for measuring the operating status of nickel iron furnaces, usually taken within a certain range, generally ranging from a few amps to tens of amps per square centimeter. An appropriate current density can ensure the normal operation of the electrode and the heating effect inside the furnace. Excessive current density may cause the electrode to consume too quickly, while insufficient current density may affect production efficiency.

Advantages: Compared with traditional methods such as blast furnace smelting, nickel iron furnaces have the advantages of high production efficiency, relatively low energy consumption, stable product quality, and strong adaptability to raw materials. It can accurately control the temperature and atmosphere inside the furnace, which is beneficial for improving the recovery rate of nickel and product quality, while effectively reducing environmental pollution.
