Cementing Plug
In general, the process involves using both a top plug and a bottom plug. Before cementing, the bottom plug is inserted into the hole and the wall of the hole is scraped and cleaned using a pump. Once the bottom plug is in place, the pressure is increased to 2-4 MPa to break the rubber film and establish circulation.
Afterwards, the cement is injected into the hole. The top plug is put in and pumping continues, along with an increase in pressure until the cementing process is completed. The top rubber plug is designed with a core of epoxy coated sand that is compressed into a solid mass. This allows the plug to withstand shock when pumped to the desired location, while still being able to be drilled out if necessary. The core is enclosed in rubber and has a solid base to prevent separation during the process.
On the other hand, the bottom rubber plug consists of a cast aluminum core that can be drilled using a PDC drill. Once the plug has finished wiping the casing and is seated in place, additional pump pressure will rupture the rubber diaphragm at the top of the core. This allows the cement slurry to continue its flow to the intended destination.
