Description

A pedestrian bridge is a bridge designed solely for pedestrians. While the primary meaning for a bridge is a structure which links "two points at a height above the ground", a pedestrian bridge can also be a lower structure, such as a boardwalk, that enables pedestrians to cross wet, fragile, or marshy land. Bridges range from stepping stones–possibly the earliest man-made structure to "bridge" water–to elaborate steel structures. Another early bridge would have been simply a fallen tree. In some cases a pedestrian bridge can be both functional and a beautiful work of art.

History
First bridges in history were pedestrian bridges and they were made of wood. Ancient Rome started making stone bridges in the 2nd century BC over the Tiber River. Some of these ancient stone footbridges with arches still stand today. One of them is Ponte Fabricio which was built in 62 BC and it still has some of its original materials. Today, modern footbridges are made of wood, rope, metal and concrete.

Design
Design of pedestrian bridge normally follows the same principles as for other bridges. However, because they are normally significantly lighter than vehicular bridges, they are more vulnerable to vibration and therefore dynamics effects are often given more attention in design.
To ensure pedestrian bridges are accessible to disabled and other mobility-impaired people, careful consideration is nowadays also given to provision of access lifts or ramps, as required by relevant legislation.

Longer main spans are achievable than with any other type of bridge
Less material may be required than other bridge types, even at spans they can achieve, leading to a reduced construction cost
Except for installation of the initial temporary cables, little or no access from below is required during construction, for example allowing a waterway to remain open while the bridge is built above
May be better able to withstand earthquake movements than heavier and more rigid bridges
Bridge decks can have deck sections replaced in order to widen traffic lanes for larger vehicles or add additions width for separated cycling/pedestrian paths.
