What is Sheet Metal Fabrication?
Sheet Metal Fabrication is a manufacturing process where sheets of metal (often steel or aluminium) are cut, folded and assembled into functional parts. The cutting of the sheet metal is achieved through the use of a laser cutting or punching process. Welding or other joining methods can be used to join parts to create complex assemblies.
Sheet metal machining is the process of bending, cutting, and/or punching successful parts of sheet metal. The basic process can be simplified into three main steps. First, a 3D model of the design is created using CAD software.

Sheet metal machining is the process of making metal parts and assemblies by cutting, bending and shaping thin metal sheets. These components are used in a wide variety of industries, including construction, automotive, aerospace and manufacturing.
What are the different types of sheet metal fabrication?
| Laser Cutting One of the key methods of cutting sheet metal is the use of laser cutting machines. Laser cutting uses a high energy beam that intensifies the burning/evaporating material through a lens or mirror to form the cut. This is a very fast and precise method of cutting sheet metal and reduces the chance of warping due to the small heat-affected zone.

Punching Sheet metal punching uses a similar cutting mechanism to the guillotine, however, it uses a formed metal tool (called a die) to make the cut. The die is forced into the metal plate in a high speed perforated plate. Standard shaped molds are usually used (round, square, rectangular), however, custom molds can punch more complex shapes. Due to the cost of making molds, this method is more suitable for mass production.

| Bending Bending is the basic manufacturing process for machining functional parts from sheet metal. The metal plate is bent using a machine called a stamping brake consisting of an upper tool (punch) and a lower tool (V-mold). The material is placed between the tools and the punch presses down into the V-mold to create a bend.

Assembling Cutting and bending are two ways of sheet metal forming, and assembly is the third way. Assembling sheet metal parts can be done using mechanical fasteners such as bolts, screws and rivets. Or they can be joined by a method called welding, in which two or more parts are fused together at high temperatures and then cooled to form a connection.
