304 vs 304l Stainless Steel Coil 304 and 304L are both austenitic stainless steels that are commonly used in a variety of applications. The main difference between the two is the carbon content. 304 stainless steel contains between 0.08% and 0.10% carbon, while 304L stainless steel contains less than 0.03% carbon. This lower carbon content in 304L makes it more resistant to sensitization, a type of corrosion that can occur when stainless steel is heated to high temperatures. Because of its lower carbon content, 304L is often used in welding applications where high temperatures are involved, such as in the manufacturing of piping and tubing. It is also often used in applications where corrosion resistance is important, such as in the food and beverage industry. In terms of their physical properties, 304 and 304L are very similar. Both have excellent corrosion resistance, good weldability, and high strength and hardness. They are both non-magnetic and have a high resistance to oxidation. Overall, the choice between 304 and 304L will depend on the specific application and the conditions under which the stainless steel will be used. If high temperatures are involved, or if corrosion resistance is a top priority, then 304L may be the better choice.
