Fire Jockey Pump Introduction:

The main purpose of the jockey pump is to maintain the water pressure within the pipes within a certain range when there is no fire so that the sprinklers do not randomly go off. The jockey pump also ensures that pressure in the pipes is maintained at normal pressure by refilling water into leaking pipes. In case of a fire break out and the pressure significantly drops, a jockey pump cannot keep up, and the low pressure will trigger the fire pump to start pumping water.

Additionally, the jockey pump prevents the fire sprinkler system from being damaged whenever the larger fire pump begins sending water through the system. If a fire system lacks a jockey pump to keep it pressurized, the system will develop relatively low pressure. This can lead to damage on the system as a result of the sudden change in pressure when the fire pump begins pumping water.

How To Choose:

It should be chosen so as to get into operation in a period as much as 10 minutes and bring the pressure to the desired level upon detecting a leakage that may be evident in the fire-extinguishing system.
It is selected at 1% of the nominal flow of the flow (min. 1 GPM), and at a pressure of more than 10% of the nominal pressure.

A jockey pump is a small pump connected to a fire sprinkler system to maintain pressure in the sprinkler pipes. This is to ensure that if a fire-sprinkler is activated, there will be a pressure drop, which will be sensed by the fire pumps automatic controller, which will cause the fire pump to start.

A jockey pump is sized for a flow less than the flow to one sprinkler in order to ensure a system pressure drop. Hence a jockey pump is an important part of the fire pumps control system.

Jockey pumps are typically small multistage centrifugal pumps, and do not have to be listed or certified for fire system application. The control equipment for jockey pumps may however carry approvals.
