The press filter is a highly efficient, mechanical device utilized in various industries for solid-liquid separation. It consists of a series of stacked filter plates or frames, alternating with filter cloths,that create a series of chambers when tightened together.
The filter press is a popular tool due to its ability to separate solids and liquids efficiently. The main reasons for using it include its fast and efficient separation, quality control of the final product, reduction of moisture in solids, versatility in applications and increased productivity with reduced operating costs.
The filter press is renowned for its ability to handle large volumes of material with high levels of solids recovery and minimal operational costs, making it an indispensable tool in mining, chemical processing, food and beverage production, wastewater treatment, and numerous other industrial applications.
Nowadays, filter plates are made from polymers or steel coated with polymer. They give good drainage surface for filter cloths. The plate sizes are ranged from 10 by 10 cm to 2.4 by 2.4 m and 0.3 to 20 cm for the frame thickness.

| Thrust plate | Thrust plate connects filter press and foundation. The feeding hole of chamber type filter press is in the middle of thrust plate, other four holes are on four corners. The upper two holes are inlet of cleaning solution and compressed air; the lower holes are outlet. |
| Compass plate | Compass plate uses to press the filter plate and filter frame tightly, the rollers on two side to compass plate can slide on the rail of main beam. |
| Main beam | Bearing components, according to the corrosion requirement, it can choose rigid polyvinyl chloride (RPVC), polypropylene (PP), stainless steel or new anticorrosive coating, etc. |
The operating pressure is commonly up to 7 bars for metal. The improvement of the technology makes it possible to remove large amount of moisture at 16 bar of pressure and operate at 30 bars. However, the pressure is 4-5 bars for wood or plastic frames. If the concentration of solids in the feed tank increase until the solid particles are attached to each other. It is possible to install moving blades in the filter press to reduce resistance to flow of liquid through the slurry. For the process prior to cake discharge, air blowing is used for cakes that have permeability of 10−11 to 10−15 m2.
