Introduction
Sapphire, which is derived from the Latin Spphins, which means blue; it belongs to the corundum group of minerals in the trigonal crystal system. In the gem world, all colors of gem-grade corundum other than rubies are called sapphires.
The main component of sapphire is alumina (Al2O3). Corundum contains trace elements such as iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti), and presents colors such as blue, sky blue, and light blue, among which the bright sky blue is the best.
Synthetic sapphire is made of pure alumina at high temperature, which is very hard and highly transparent. Chemically speaking, there is no difference between synthetic sapphire and natural crystal. Because no other elements are added, it is colorless and transparent. The original synthetic sapphire is cut into discs by a diamond tool, and then polished into a watch mirror. This may also be one of the reasons for the high cost of sapphire crystals, because the cost of these processing tools is also high. Many construction and decoration materials also use silicon-carbon compounds, such as artificial stone, etc., so everyone must know that friction with these places will leave scratches on the sapphire crystal.
Basic characteristics
Sapphire single crystal is a simple coordination type oxide crystal, which is anisotropic and belongs to the hexagonal crystal system. The lattice parameters a=b=0.4758nm, c=1.299 1 nm, α=β=90°, γ=120 °.
The light transmittance range of sapphire single crystal is 0.14-6.0μm, covering vacuum ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared to mid-infrared band, and has high optical transmittance in the 3-5μm band; it has high hardness (second only to diamond) , Mechanical and thermal properties of high strength, high thermal conductivity, high thermal shock resistance quality factor; stable chemical properties resistant to corrosion such as rain, sand, and salt spray; high surface smoothness, high resistivity and high dielectric properties .
