There are two types of membrane water walls, one is to weld flat steel between the plain pipes to form a membrane water wall; The other is welded by rolling shaped fin tubes. The membrane water wall has the best protection for the furnace wall, and the weight and thickness of the furnace wall are greatly reduced. Because the furnace wall of the membrane water wall only needs insulation materials, not refractory materials, light boilers can be used. At the same time, the metal consumption of the water wall does not increase much. In addition, the membrane water wall has good air tightness, which greatly reduces the air leakage of the furnace, and even micro positive pressure combustion can be used to improve the thermal efficiency of the boiler.
According to the structural type, there are three main types: plain tube type, membrane type and squeaked tube type.
The plain tube water wall is composed of a whole row of seamless steel pipes, and their structure is the simplest; the membrane water wall weld many rolled water-cooled fin tubes together with spot welding, so that they become a sealed combined heating surface, which can not only improve the air tightness of the furnace, reduce air leakage, but also better protect the furnace wall, reduce the weight of the furnace wall, simplify the structure; the water wall of the spur tube is to weld many pins with a length of 20~25mm and a diameter of 6~12mm on the water-cooled wall tube, and then apply chrome ore refractory plastic in order to reduce the heat absorption of this part of the water wall and increase the temperature of the combustion zone, it is suitable for occasions where fuel ignition is particularly difficult or some liquid slag discharge furnaces.
According to the layout part, there are two kinds of attached wall type and partition wall type (i.e., double-sided heating) water cooling wall.
The former is mostly partially embedded in the inner wall of the furnace wall and absorbs heat on one side, while the latter is mostly installed in the middle of the furnace chamber of a large boiler, separating the whole furnace into two independent parts that are heated on both sides.

The high temperature gas produced by combustion in the boiler furnace will be cooled through the water wall, and the water wall pipe will make the combustion process more complete by absorbing the heat released by the high temperature gas, thus improving the combustion efficiency.
(2)Control emissions
The role of the water wall also includes controlling the emission of harmful substances such as nitrogen oxides and sulfides produced during the combustion process of the boiler, making the chemical composition of the flue gas more stable and reasonable.
(3)Protect the boiler wall
The water wall can effectively reduce the temperature of the inner wall of the boiler furnace, reduce the time and opportunity of direct contact between the boiler wall and high temperature gas, and thus greatly extend the service life of the boiler
