UF is a pressure-driven membrane filtration technology used to treat various types of water and wastewater to remove suspended solids and solutes.
Membrane filtration has four filtration ranges. This enables the target particles to be removed and the target particles to remain in the liquid. Simply put, pressure drives the water purification process by forcing liquid through the surface of a semipermeable membrane. The feed stream enters the membrane and the feed pump generates pressure. This splits the feed stream into two new streams called permeate and retentate. Permeate is composed of water molecules and dissolved solutes that can pass through a semipermeable membrane barrier. At the same time, high molecular weight suspended solids and solutes are retained by the membrane barrier. Controlling the selectivity is the membrane pore size, ie the size of the particles that are retained.
These membranes can operate at low pressures, making them an energy-efficient, low-cost solution.
