12L14 is easy-to-cut structural steel, easy-cutting steel is easy to be (turning, milling, drawing, planing, drilling, etc.) cutting steel grade, also known as automatic machine tool processing steel, referred to as automatic steel. It was created to adapt to machining automation and assembly line production. This kind of steel can be used for cutting with higher cutting speed and deeper knife eating amount, and because of the addition of easy-cutting elements in the steel, the cutting resistance is reduced and the compound formed by the added element itself plays the role of lubricating the cutting edge, so that the chips are easy to break, reduce wear, thereby improving the finish and accuracy of the parts to be processed, and improving the tool life and production efficiency. 12L14 belongs to lead-sulfur composite easy-cutting structural steel. Lead easy to cut steel, lead to tiny elemental metal particles distributed in the steel and in the steel is not solid melting, in the cutting process, the tool and the machined parts produce strong friction, so that the lead particles in the steel in the molten precipitation, thereby playing a role in lubrication to improve the cutting performance of the steel, so that the steel chips are finely crushed, reduce the tool wear, and finally extend the tool life. Compared with lead-free steel, the cutting performance of leaded steel can be improved by 20~50%, while the mechanical properties and heat treatment properties remain basically unchanged, and there is no effect on cold and hot workability and weldability. Lead free-cutting steel has been widely used as an important part for the manufacture of precision instrument parts, automobile parts, and various types of machinery. However, lead easy-cutting steel has low contact fatigue, so it is not suitable for gears, bearings and other parts that bear large fatigue stress loads. 12L14 has a tendency to be replaced by it. Its cutting performance is also excellent. Suitable for more stringent applications where 12L14 cannot be used.
