Physical property
Appearance: Colorless or white crystalline solid.
Molecular weight: 244.26 g/mol (BaCl₂·2H₂O).
Density: 3.097 g/cm³ (25°C).
Melting point: about 120°C (loss of crystal water),

anhydrous barium chloride melting point is 962°C.
Solubility:
Soluble in water, solubility increases significantly with

temperature (about 37 g/100 mL water at 20°C).
Hygroscopicity: barium chloride dihydrate is stable in air,
but anhydrous barium chloride has strong hygroscopicity.
Chemical properties
Stability:
It is stable at room temperature, but when heated to about 120°C it loses its crystal water and
transforms into anhydrous barium chloride (BaCl₂).
Acid-alkaline: The aqueous solution is neutral.
Reactivity:
The reaction with the sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻) ₄ resulted in

the white barium sulfate (BaSO₄) precipitation.
This reaction is commonly used to detect sulfate ions.
Reacted with the chromate ion (CrO₄²⁻) to ₄ The precipitation of barium chromate yellow (BaCrO₄).
reacts with the carbonate ion (CO ²⁻) to form a white barium carbonate (BaCO₃) precipitation.
Main use
Laboratory reagents:
Used to detect the sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻), the chromate ion (CrO₄²⁻),

and the carbonate ion (CO ₄²⁻).
As a buffer or standard substance.
Industrial Applications:
Used in the manufacture of other barium compounds (such as barium carbonate, barium sulfate).
Used in water treatment, metal heat treatment and ceramic industry.
Other uses:
Used to make green fireworks.
Used in medicine as an intermediate for certain drugs.

1. Mordant
Function: Barium chloride as a mordant, help dye better adhere to the fiber, improve the dyeing effect.

2. Color fixing agent
Function: Barium chloride reacts with dye to form insoluble precipitation, enhances the fastness of dyeing and prevents fading.

Application: Used to improve the washable and light fastness of dyed fabrics.

3. Dyeing process
Pretreatment: Before dyeing, the fabric is treated with barium chloride solution to improve the dye adsorption capacity.

Dyeing process: barium chloride is added to the dye bath to promote the combination of dye and fiber.

Post-treatment: After dyeing, barium chloride solution is used to fix the color and enhance the dyeing fastness.
