What is Fog Light ? 

Fog lights are the lights mounted on the front of a car or truck which help visibility in foggy or misty conditions. They come in a variety of colors and intensities, but virtually all vehicles have them, and their assistance can be crucial to navigating poor weather.

Fog light have a low, flat, fan shaped beam designed to improve the driver's ability to view the road. Fog light must only be used in low visibility conditions such as fog or snow.

Fog Light Beams

Fog lights have a unique beam shape. Their beams are flat and wide, and they are positioned low on the car, usually near the front bumper. The shape of the fog light beams usually resembles a narrow bar. They are meant to cut through the fog and light up the surface of the road so that drivers can see well enough to stay on the road and within their lane. In addition to fog and mist, fog lights are also useful where there are significant amounts of dust and snow on the road, either drifting in through the air or being churned up from the surface of the road. Without fog lights, drivers might not see obstacles such as tree branches, wild animals, or debris in time to avoid them.

  
The Right Way of Using Fog Light:

Fog lights are very different from all other lights in the way they shed their light on the road. A spotlight shines a direct beam of light forward. A fog light has a special lens which diffuses the light and instead of sending a direct beam forward it scatters light broadly to both the front and and slightly off-set to either side of the vehicle. Many drivers put fog lights on thinking they are improving visibility when it is not foggy. This is wrong!!! They are only effective in the fog and should not be used unless it is actually foggy. They can dazzle oncoming vehicles in clear light/dark conditions. Spot lights are ideal on unlight roads in the dark and can be used to pick out distant hazards. They should only come on when the main beam is on, and of course you should always dip headlights when oncoming traffic approaches. There are also fig lights fitted to the rear of vehicles and ahain these should only be used in foggy conditions when visibility is below 75 yards. Particularly on motorways and highways where traffic is moving faster nut don't forget... Never go so fast that you cannot stop in the distance you can see clearly and never simply follow the car lights in front of you when it is foggy. Always keep safe distance and reduce speed to dead slow if need be. Only some drives fast in the dark and many have proved this with their names to be found in graveyards! These fog lights to the rear of the car do not help you to see any better. But shine brighter than the standard tail lights and allow other drivers behind you to see your car at a greater distance and car certainly help prevent someone running into the back of you. So Fog lights on and slow down in the fog and turn off when it clears and don't forget the rear fog lights. If you leave then on it will dazzle any following driver.
