The axial flow pump impeller is equipped with 2 to 7 blades, which rotate in the tube-shaped pump casing. The pump casing above the impeller is equipped with fixed guide vanes to eliminate the rotating movement of the liquid. It turns into axial movement and converts the kinetic energy of rotational movement into pressure energy. Axial flow pumps are usually single-stage, and a few are made into two-stage. The flow range is large, from 1.8 to 3.6 million cubic meters per hour; the head is generally below 20 meters. Axial flow pumps are generally vertical, the impeller is submerged under water, and there are also horizontal or inclined axial flow pumps. When the impeller of the small axial flow pump is installed above the water surface, it is necessary to use a vacuum pump to exhaust and divert water to start. The blades of the axial flow pump are divided into fixed and adjustable two structures. The working conditions of large-scale axial flow pumps (mainly flow) often need to be changed greatly during operation. Adjusting the installation angle of the blades can keep the pump running in a high efficiency area under different working conditions. The blade installation angle of small pumps is generally fixed. Axial flow pumps belong to the highest specific speed of power pumps, with a specific speed of 500～1600. The pump’s flow-head, flow-shaft power characteristic curve is steep in the small flow area, so it should be avoided to run in this unstable small flow area. The axial power of the axial flow pump is the largest at zero flow, so the valve on the discharge line must be opened before the pump is started to reduce the starting power. Axial flow pumps are mainly suitable for occasions with low lift and large flow, such as irrigation, drainage, dock drainage, water level adjustment of canal locks, or large circulating water pumps in power plants. The axial flow pump with higher head (double-stage if necessary) can be used for water jet propulsion of shallow water ships.
