Introduction of BS4504 Threaded Flanges:
Threaded flanges, also known as screw flanges, companion flanges, or NPT flanges, feature a central female National Pipe Thread (NPT) which simplifies connections to male NPT threaded pipes. This design is widely utilized across diverse industries due to its compatibility with standard thread forms for linking pipes and fittings. Threaded flanges are particularly useful for creating reducing connections, enabling larger pipes or fittings with larger NPT threads to be attached to smaller counterparts with smaller NPT threads.
In various sectors such as plumbing, oil and gas, chemical processing, and general industrial piping systems, threaded flanges with NPT threads find extensive application. They are chosen when a threaded connection is preferred or required, facilitating straightforward installation, maintenance, and modification of piping systems.
Threaded flanges are designed with internal threads that allow them to connect to threaded pipes without the need for welding, offering convenience in installation and maintenance where welding is impractical or impossible.
In situations where alloy steel flanges are sufficiently strong but welding presents challenges or poor performance, threaded flanges provide a viable alternative. However, it's crucial to note their limitations. They are not suitable for applications involving sharp temperature changes or extremes outside the range of -45°C to 260°C, as these conditions can potentially cause leakage.
Threaded flanges resemble Slip-On flanges in appearance but are specifically bored to match the inner diameter of the pipe. The backside of the center opening is threaded with tapered pipe threads of the appropriate size.
The primary advantage of threaded flanges lies in their elimination of welding requirements, thereby minimizing additional stresses on the pipe or vessel during flange installation. However, threaded flanges tend to be thicker and more costly compared to other types. They excel in applications requiring high-pressure connections.
