Six methods to optimize the design of CNC machining parts:
Rapid, cost-effective manufacturing of prototypes and production parts is usually a balance between rapid turning CNC machining capabilities and optimized parts designed for these capabilities. Therefore, when designing parts for milling and turning processes, there are six important considerations to accelerate production time and reduce costs.
1. Hole depth and diameter
In most cases, the holes are interpolated with the end milling cutter, rather than drilled. This machining method provides great flexibility in the hole size of a given tool and provides a better surface finish than a drill. It also allows us to use the same tools to process grooves and cavities, reducing cycle time and part costs. The only disadvantage is that due to the limited length of the end mill, holes with more than six diameters deep become a challenge and may need to be machined from both sides of the part.
2. Size and type of thread
Drilling and thread making go hand in hand. Many manufacturers use "taps" to cut internal threads. The tap looks like a toothed screw and "screws" into the previously drilled hole. We use a more modern method to make threads, a tool called a thread milling cutter to insert the thread profile. This allows the creation of precise threads and the use of a single milling tool to cut any thread size that shares this pitch (threads per inch), saving production and installation time. Therefore, UNC and UNF threads from # 2 to 1/2 inch and metric threads from M2 to M12 can be used in a single tool set.
3. Text on the part
Do you want to engrave the part number, description or logo on the part? Quickmachining supports most of the text required for processing, provided that the spacing between individual characters and the strokes used to "write" them are at least 0.020 inches (0.5 mm). In addition, the text should be concave rather than convex. It is recommended to use 20 point or larger fonts, such as Arial, Verdana or similar sans serif fonts.
