A nautical sextant is an astronomical navigational instrument used by ships to determine the Angle between a celestial body and the waterline. Since the graduated arc on the instrument is one-sixth of the circumference, it is called a sextant.
The nautical sextant is an instrument used to observe the altitude of celestial bodies. Like any other instrument, the nautical sextant also has errors. Some of the errors of the nautical sextant cannot be checked and corrected. There are also errors that can be checked and corrected in the sextant, which should be carefully checked and corrected before each use of the sextant.
There are two kinds of nautical sextant: optical sextant and radio sextant. The former relies on visible light, while the latter relies on radio waves emitted by celestial bodies to determine the altitude and azimuth of celestial bodies.

Note:
1. When taking the sextant, you should take its handle or frame body, not other parts, and the movement should be light and steady. When temporarily not in use, to three legs on the desktop, not reversed. After use, all parts of the sextant should be put back in place and put back in the box in time. If the box cover can not be closed, can not be hard cover, to find out the reason carefully, after troubleshooting the cover.
2. When the sextant is used or calibrated, the rotation of all parts should be light. If the relevant parts are not flexible to move, the first thing to do is to find out the reason and troubleshoot the problem. Do not pull and turn the sextant hard. Indicator rod movement, to pinch the spring clamp, do not make tangent thread and scale arc tooth collision. Keep out of the sun and rain.
3. The sextant is usually placed on the bridge or in the chart room. Such as summer or winter indoor temperature and outdoor temperature difference is large, before use, should first get outdoor for a period of time, generally half an hour in advance, in a ventilated place, in order to adapt to the outdoor weather conditions.
4. When the sextant is not used at ordinary times, it should be put in the box and covered well. Place away from the heat source, not vibration, dry and fixed box facilities place. Can not be placed at will, in case of the ship in the wind and waves shaking broken.
5. The sextant is not allowed to be used arbitrarily, and its parts are not allowed to be disassembled arbitrarily. The handling process should pay attention to protection, to prevent collision and extrusion
