Foam Filled Fenders -netted Type

PI
Foam filled fenders of the netted type are crucial components in the marine industry. These fenders are designed to safeguard vessels and docking structures from the damaging impacts that occur during berthing and unberthing operations. The combination of a foam core and a netted outer layer creates a unique set of properties that make them highly effective in various marine scenarios.

Application

Cruise ships
LNG and oil terminals
Container vessels
Bulk cargo
Roro and ferries
Ship-to-ship operations
Military application
Open sea terminals
Oil and gas tankers
Large tidal wave docks
General cargo

Structure

Foam core: usually made of closed-cell polyethylene foam (PE), ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer foam (EVA) and other materials, with light weight, high elasticity and good energy absorption characteristics.

Reinforcement layer: a mesh structure made of nylon filaments and other materials, wrapped around the outside of the foam core, which can enhance the overall strength and tear resistance of the fender and prevent the foam core from being damaged.

Outer skin: generally sprayed polyurethane (PU) elastomer, with wear resistance, seawater corrosion resistance, UV resistance and other properties, which can protect the internal foam core and reinforcement layer and extend the service life of the fender.

Protective net: composed of iron chains and tire nets, etc., surrounded by the outermost layer of the fender, providing additional protection for the fender and enhancing its impact and friction resistance.

Standard size and performance

The above data shows that the energy absorption and reaction force of netted foam - filled fenders increase with the increase of size. Under the same compression ratio, larger - sized fenders can absorb more energy and bear greater reaction force, which can better meet the requirements of different occasions such as large - tonnage ship berthing.

Fender Quality control
Quality control of fenders is crucial to ensure their reliability and effectiveness in protecting structures from impacts. Here are the key aspects of fender quality control:
Raw Material Inspection
Foam Material: Check the density, hardness, and elasticity of the foam. It should meet the specified standards to ensure proper energy - absorption capabilities. For example, the density of the polyethylene foam should be within a certain range to provide the desired cushioning effect.
Netting Material: Examine the strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion of the netting. The netting should be able to withstand the forces exerted on the fender and protect the foam core. High - quality nylon or polyester netting is commonly used for its excellent tensile strength.
Outer Skin Material: Inspect the outer skin material for its abrasion - resistance, weather - resistance, and tear - resistance. A polyurethane - based outer skin is often preferred for its ability to resist damage from UV radiation, salt water, and physical impacts.
Manufacturing Process Monitoring
Foam Injection: Ensure that the foam is evenly injected into the fender mold to achieve a consistent density and structure throughout the fender. Any voids or uneven distribution of foam can affect the fender's performance.
Netting Installation: Check that the netting is properly installed and secured around the foam core. It should be evenly distributed and tightly wrapped to provide effective protection and prevent the foam from shifting or deforming.
Outer Skin Application: Verify that the outer skin is applied smoothly and evenly, without any bubbles or cracks. A proper bond between the outer skin and the foam core is essential to maintain the integrity of the fender.
Dimensional Accuracy Check
Overall Dimensions: Measure the length, diameter, and thickness of the fender to ensure they match the specified dimensions. Deviations from the standard dimensions can affect the fender's fit and performance. For example, a fender that is too short or too narrow may not provide adequate protection.
Wall Thickness: Check the thickness of the foam core and the outer skin at various points to ensure uniformity. Uneven wall thickness can lead to inconsistent energy - absorption and reduced durability.
Performance Testing
Compression Testing: Subject the fender to compressive forces to measure its energy - absorption and reaction - force characteristics. The fender should be able to withstand the expected impact forces and return to its original shape after compression.
Impact Testing: Simulate real - world impact scenarios using drop - weight or pendulum - type impact testers. This helps to evaluate the fender's ability to absorb and dissipate impact energy, as well as its resistance to damage.
Fatigue Testing: Perform repeated loading and unloading cycles to assess the fender's long - term durability and resistance to fatigue failure. Fenders used in high - traffic areas need to withstand frequent impacts without losing their effectiveness.
Visual Inspection
Surface Finish: Examine the surface of the fender for any defects such as scratches, dents, or discoloration. A smooth and clean surface finish not only improves the appearance of the fender but also indicates good manufacturing quality.
Seam Integrity: Check the seams and joints of the fender for any signs of separation or weakness. Well - sealed seams are important to prevent water or other contaminants from entering the fender and affecting its performance.
Certification and Documentation
Quality Standards: Ensure that the fender meets relevant national and international quality standards, such as those set by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), or the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Testing Reports: Keep detailed records of all raw material inspections, manufacturing process monitoring, and performance testing. These reports serve as evidence of the fender's quality and can be provided to customers or regulatory authorities upon request.
