Advantages

 

Pure magnesium is not suitable as structural material, but magnesium alloy with alloying element has high strength and can be used as structural material. Magnesium alloys have the following advantages as structural materials:

 

  1. light weight. Magnesium alloy, as a lightweight metal structure material, has a density of 1.74 cm-3, which is equivalent to 2/3 of that of aluminum, l/4 of steel and 1/4 of that of zinc.   2. higher than intensity. Under the same rigidity condition, the strength of 1kg magnesium alloy is equal to 18kg aluminum and 2.1kg steel.

  3. high shock absorption performance. Magnesium has excellent hysteretic and shock absorbing properties, can absorb vibration and noise.

  4. good casting performance. Under the condition of maintaining good structure, the wall thickness of magnesium products can be less than 0.6mm, which cannot be achieved by plastic products under the same strength.

     5.  high die casting productivity. Magnesium alloys have a lower heat capacity than aluminum, which means they solidify faster in the mold.
