A tall mast lighting is a tall pole with the top lighting pointing towards the ground and is usually, but not always, used to illuminate highways or recreational areas. It is used where large areas of lighting are required. Lighting in some units is surrounded by circular shields to prevent or reduce light pollution or light intrusion affecting communities near highways.
