Mechanical fans are most commonly found on trucks and SUVs, as well as some RWD cars. This is easier to achieve because the engine is mounted longitudinally and the belt attachment assembly is mounted facing the radiator. The fan is mounted on the crankshaft pulley or one of the accessory pulleys (such as the water pump pulley) and will rotate between the radiator and the engine, drawing air back through the radiator and blowing it across the engine. Even though the air is heated through the radiator, it is still much cooler than the surface of the engine, so the airflow over the engine helps with cooling.
