Significant efforts have been dedicated to induction machine fault diagnosis during the last two decades and many techniques have been proposed [4-32]. Thus, a brief description of the main techniques presented in the literature, as well as their advantages and disadvantages are presented in this section.
Several fault detection and identification techniques are based on stator current spectral signature analysis, which uses the power spectrum of the stator current [10, 20] to detect broken rotor bar faults. These fault detection techniques are based on the magnitude of certain frequency components of the stator currents. Specifically, a FastFourier Transform (FFT) of the current is taken. The first spectral peak less than the fundamental frequency is called the low sideband. The magnitude of the low sideband is measured and compared to a threshold. The result of this comparison determines if an induction motor has broken rotor bars. However, these techniques may fail to detect induction motor fault conditions because the sidebands can be masked due to the windowing processes used to compute the power spectrum of the current signals, as was shown in.
