KEMET Electronics Flexible Termination technology is utilized in several series of surface-mount multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs). These capacitors were developed to address flex cracks, the industry's primary failure mode for MLCCs. Flexible termination directs circuit board stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area, reducing the risk of mechanical damage to the component that can result in low IR and short circuit failures.
KEMET's Fail Open Technology features unique internal electrode designs configured to protect against a low IR or short circuit failure.
KEMET Open Mode FO-CAP capacitor significantly minimizes the chance of a short because a flex crack will not typically propagate across counter electrodes within the device's "active area." The lack of current leakage from the Open Mode flex crack eliminates localized heating, therefore, greatly reducing the risk of a catastrophic and costly failure event. Open Mode designed devices compliment KEMET 's Floating Electrode (FE-CAP) and Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP) products by providing a fail-safe design optimized for mid to high-range capacitance values.
KEMET Fail-Safe Floating Electrode MLCC/FE-CAP utilizes a floating internal electrode design, where electrodes form multiple capacitors in a single MLCC package. Improved voltage and ESD performance over standard designs lower the risk of low-IR or short-circuit failures that may occur due to board flex. The unique electrode configuration of the FE-CAP MLCCs from KEMET also allows for a fail-open condition if the capacitor is mechanically damaged (cracked). If damaged, the capacitor may lose capacitance, but a short is unlikely. FE-CAP MLCCs offer low to mid-capacitance flex mitigation.
KEMET's Flexible Termination Technology features a soft termination system that reduces the transfer of board stress to the capacitor, reducing the likelihood of flex cracks which often result in low IR or short circuit failures.
KEMET's Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) offer a unique, flexible termination system that is integrated with KEMET 's standard termination materials. Conductive silver epoxy is utilized between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system in order to establish pliability while maintaining terminal strength, solderability, and electrical performance. The flexible termination technology within the FT-CAP MLCC provides superior flex performance (up to 5mm) over standard termination systems. High voltage (HV FT-CAPs) are also available in DC voltage ratings of 500V, 630V, 1KV, 1.5KV, 2KV, 2.5KV, and 3KV. The Flexible Termination is also available on X8L Dielectric devices that offer a higher operating temperature range up to 150°C.
KEMET High Voltage Flexible Termination (HV FT-CAP) MLCCs are SMT commercial-grade X7R capacitors that combine high-voltage and flexible termination technology. The HV FT-CAPs are available in DC voltage ratings of 500V, 630V, 1KV, 1.5KV, 2KV, 2.5KV, and 3KV.
KEMET Automotive Grade Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) MLCCs are VW 80808 specification compliant and offer DC voltage ratings up to 250V, a capacitance range of 180pF to 10µF, and a superior flex performance.
