Toshiba Automotive Photocouplers are available in three families: IC outputs with several configurations, Transistor Outputs, and Photovoltaic Outputs. All isolation voltages are guaranteed for 3750Vrms.
Toshiba IC Output Photocouplers range from 1Mbps to 20Mbps. These photocouplers are ideal for communicating over an isolation barrier. Output configurations are either open collector or totem-pole structured. All of these IC output photocouplers come in a 5 pin 3.7mm × 7.0mm × 2.1mm SO-6 package.
Toshiba Transistor Output Photocouplers employ a transistor output within the internal structure, therefore the main characteristics are similar to a transistor. Current Transfer Ratio (CTR) varies between 50 to 900 and VCEO is either 40V or 80V, depending on preference. VCE(sat) and IC(max) are constant at 0.4V and 0.05A, respectively. These transistor photocouplers are packaged in a 4 pin SO-4, measuring 2.6mm × 7.0mm × 2.1mm and a 4 pin SO-6, measuring 3.7mm × 7.0mm × 2.1mm.
Toshiba Photovoltaic Photocouplers offer two different photovoltaic output photocouplers. They employ a photodiode array as the primary method of coupling. Both perform similarly, offering short circuit current minimums (ISC(min)) of 12μA, and open voltage minimums (VOC(min)) of 7V. The main difference between the two is the internal control circuit which allows the TLX9906 to turn off about 80% faster (0.2ms vs 1ms). These two also come in a 4 pin SO-6, measuring 3.7mm × 7.0mm × 2.1mm.
Toshiba Photorelays are a great modern solution for replacing the traditional mechanical relay. The biggest benefit is the solid-state functionality, which allows for better longevity versus the traditional mechanical relay which repeatedly moves a coil back and forward. This lack of wear and tear is highly desirable in a product which is designed to have a long lifespan. Also, photorelays are functionally faster and less noisy. There is no bouncing or physical movement. Signals are clean and fast, two very important characteristics. Toshiba's first AEC-Q101 grade photorelay features an off-state voltage VOFF maximum of 600V and a maximum on-state current (ION) of 15mA. This is available in the 4 pin SO-6 package, which is substantially smaller than a traditional mechanical relay.
