Hot stamping or foil stamping is a printing method of relief printing in which pre-dried ink or foils are transferred to a surface at high temperatures. The method has diversified since its rise to prominence in the 19th century to include a variety of processes. After the 1970s, hot stamping became one of the most important methods of decoration on the surface of plastic products.

Hot stamping is a hybrid forming process that integrates sheet metal forming (thin-wall component fabrication), hot forging (less forming load, strain-rate sensitive, and phase transformation), and injection molding (cooling system in the mold).

*What is hot stamping?

The hot stamping process includes a hot stamping press, a hot stamping die or type, and sometimes a hot stamping foil if you choose to add color to your impression. The hot stamping press contains a heating element that heats up the die or type; the marking cycle starts when the press engages the heated die or type with the foil and transfers the ink from the foil carrier onto the part to be marked. The press then disengages at the end of the marking cycle leaving behind a crisp, permanent, ink impression on the part.

Hot stamping technology is delivering sheet metal auto body structural parts with high strength-to-weight ratio. The technology links the established knowledge of martensitic hardening of special high strength steels with the well-known benefits of deep-drawing processes at higher temperatures.
