Expansion joints(compensators)

  • Introduction

Expansion joints, commonly known as compensators, are essential components comprising one or more bellows, connectors, supports, flanges, conduits, and additional accessories. These flexible structures, installed on vessel shells or pipelines, effectively mitigate additional stresses resulting from temperature fluctuations and mechanical vibrations. By harnessing the expansion and contraction of bellows, they accommodate dimensional changes in pipelines, conduits, and vessels caused by thermal variations, as well as compensate for axial, lateral, and angular displacements. Beyond this, they contribute to noise and vibration reduction and enhance heating supply systems. To prevent deformation or damage to heating pipelines due to thermal expansion, compensators must be installed, alleviating stress on pipeline walls and supporting structures. With their elastic nature allowing free expansion and contraction, they offer reliable operation, stellar performance, and compact designs. Consequently, they find extensive use in chemical engineering, metallurgy, nuclear energy, and related fields. Vessel expansion joints typically adopt U-shaped designs, while pipeline joints are classified into various types based on structural compensation, including universal, pressure balanced, hinged, and gimbal joints.

Slip-Type Expansion Joint The slip-type expansion joint comprises inner and outer sleeves allowing relative axial movement, sealed with a stuffing box to maintain alignment of pipe ends. It's primarily composed of sleeves, shells, and sealing materials. Designed to compensate for axial expansion and rotation in pipelines at any angle, it offers a compact design with substantial compensation capability, suitable for hot water, steam, and grease media. By sliding the inner sleeve against the outer one, it accommodates thermal expansion. Equipped with a high-performance self-sealing dynamic seal, the inner sleeve seamlessly slides within the shell, ensuring effective sealing for any pipeline. Enhanced with synthetic materials, the seal withstands high temperatures, corrosion, and aging, with an applicable temperature range of -40 to 150 degrees Celsius, extendable to 350 degrees Celsius in specialized conditions. It ensures axial sliding and prevents leakage, offering comprehensive functionality for pipeline applications.
Non-metallic Expansion Joint Rubber Expansion Joint Composed of rubber and rubber-fiber composite materials, steel flanges, sleeves, and insulation materials, it is mainly used for flexible connections between various fans and ducts. Its functions include shock absorption, noise reduction, sealing, medium resistance, easy displacement and installation. It is an ideal accessory for shock absorption, noise reduction, smoke and dust removal in the field of environmental protection.
Fabric Expansion Joint The fabric expansion joint, primarily composed of fiber fabric, rubber, and high-temperature resistant materials, effectively compensates for fan and duct vibrations and deformations. Offering compensation for axial, lateral, and angular movements, it boasts features like no thrust, simplified support design, corrosion resistance, and high temperature resilience. Ideal for hot blast pipes and smoke and dust pipelines in power plants, its fiber fabric and insulation cotton provide sound absorption and vibration isolation, reducing noise and vibration from boilers, fans, and other systems.
