The battery active equalizer (HKIVI-24S-BL10A) is a balanced management system for large-capacity series lithium battery packs. The Battery Balancer implements active energy transfer equalization by isolating DC.
A battery balancer is a device used to maintain the balance and equalization of individual cells within a multi-cell battery pack. Here are the key points about battery balancers:
Purpose and Functionality:
In a multi-cell battery pack, individual cells can become unbalanced over time due to factors like self-discharge, temperature variations, and uneven usage.
A battery balancer monitors the voltage of each cell and actively balances the pack by redistributing charge from higher-voltage cells to lower-voltage cells.
Benefits of Battery Balancing:
Extends the overall lifespan of the battery pack by preventing premature capacity loss and cell failures.
Improves the pack's performance, efficiency, and runtime by ensuring all cells are maintained at an optimal state of charge.
Reduces the risk of overcharging or overdischarging individual cells, which can lead to safety issues.
Types of Battery Balancers:
Passive Balancing: Dissipates excess energy from higher-voltage cells through resistors.
Active Balancing: Actively transfers energy between cells using DC-DC converters or switches.
Hybrid Balancing: Combines passive and active balancing techniques.
Balancing Algorithms and Strategies:
Battery balancers use various algorithms to detect cell imbalances and determine the appropriate balancing actions.
Common strategies include top balancing (balancing at the fully charged state), bottom balancing (balancing at the fully discharged state), and continuous balancing.
Integration and Monitoring:
Battery balancers are often integrated into the battery management system (BMS) of a multi-cell battery pack.
The BMS monitors the individual cell voltages and temperatures, and coordinates the balancing activities.
Some balancers provide data logging and reporting features to track the balancing performance.
They are particularly important in applications where long-term reliability and consistent performance are critical.
Proper selection and integration of a battery balancer, along with regular maintenance and monitoring, can help ensure the longevity and safe operation of multi-cell battery packs in various applications.

A single HKIVI-24S-BL10A Battery Balancer is suitable for battery packs with 2-24 strings of cells connected
in series. Use external AC90V-265V global power supply.
Apply the Battery Balancer to a battery pack with a voltage lower than 40V. The installation and wiring
method is shown in Figure 5 (the figure takes 3 strings with an external power supply as an example)
Before turning on the power, please confirm again whether the connection of the
equalizing line is normal, whether the power provided to the equalizer is within the required
range, check whether the Battery Balancer has been placed securely, and confirm whether the circuit
board is short-circuited, etc. Turn on the power supply of the equalizer, otherwise it may cause
serious consequences such as abnormal operation or even burning.
On the real-time status page, you can view information such as cell voltage, total battery voltage,
maximum voltage difference, cell average voltage, balance state, balance current, device
temperature, and device address.
The Battery Balancer itself does not have high voltage and will not cause electric shock damage to
the body.
The Battery Balancer has static-sensitive devices and needs to be protected against static electricity.
Improper operation may cause damage to the equalizer. If you need to operate the equalizer,
please pay attention to the following instructions:
a) Before touching the PCB, the person performing the operation must discharge the static
electricity and take anti-static measures;
b) The equalizer is not allowed to come into contact with electrical insulating materials -
plastic films, insulating table tops or clothing made of man-made fibers;
c) When welding on the Battery Balancer, make sure that the tip of the soldering iron is grounded;
d) If it is unavoidable to use a non-conductive container, it must be packaged with
conductive materials before placing the PCB, such as conductive foam rubber or ordinary
aluminum foil.
When selecting a battery balancer for a specific application, there are several key factors to consider:
Battery Pack Configuration:
Voltage and capacity of the overall battery pack
Number of cells in the pack and their individual voltages
Chemistry of the cells (e.g., lithium-ion, lead-acid, NiMH)
Balancing Technique:
Passive, active, or hybrid balancing approach
Balancing speed and efficiency
Impact on the battery pack's runtime and efficiency
Balancing Current and Power:
Maximum balancing current the balancer can handle
Balancing power required based on the battery pack size and imbalance levels
Thermal management capabilities of the balancer
Monitoring and Control:
Ability to monitor individual cell voltages and temperatures
Integration with the battery management system (BMS)
Data logging and reporting features
Safety and Protection:
Overcurrent, overvoltage, and overtemperature protection
Compliance with relevant safety standards (e.g., UL, CE, UN38.3)
Failure mode behavior and fault tolerance
Form Factor and Mounting:
Physical size and weight of the balancer
Compatibility with the available space and mounting options
Ease of installation and integration into the overall system
Environmental Considerations:
Operating temperature range and cooling requirements
Resistance to vibration, shock, and other environmental stresses
Ingress protection (IP rating) for outdoor or harsh environments
Cost and Lifecycle:
Initial cost of the balancer
Ongoing maintenance and replacement requirements
Total cost of ownership over the expected lifetime of the application
By carefully evaluating these factors, you can select a battery balancer that is well-suited for your specific application, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and longevity of the battery pack.
