Benefits of Metal Pallets
The lifespan of a metal pallet is significantly longer than a wood pallet. The traditional wood pallet can be used a few times without any issue and can be repaired, or can be an item that is only used once and then discarded. The metal pallet is built to last. Depending on the manufacturer a pallet manufactured from recycled aluminum can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years with no issue. A plastic pallet can last much longer than a wooden pallet, perhaps more than a year, but not as long as the metal pallet.
A common complaint now is the issue of wood pallets being subject to contamination from bacteria. This is of great concern when the pallet is being used to transport food items. The FDA, back in 2007, reported that ten percent of wood pallets intercepted and tested contained traces of E. Coli, Listeria and other bacteria. The use of metal pallets alleviates this issue as metal pallets can be sanitized easily and are ideal for the transportation of food items. As wall as being easier to remove bacteria, metal pallets are less prone to damage during transportation. The food industry reports that twenty eight to forty four percent of product damage related un-saleable product is "crushed, dented, or collapsed" products. This is often due to the failure of wood pallets in transit causing the load to fall or move, causing the damage to the food products. With metal pallets, the likelihood of damage during transportation is much lower, reducing overall loses.
Metal pallets are often manufactured from recycled aluminum, which is material that can always be recycled, so when a pallet is at the end of its life-cycle, it can be used to create more aluminum pallets. Some metal pallets are made from stainless steel, which is ideal for some industries; hospitals, pharmaceuticals, food preparation, and nuclear energy. These industries use stainless steel pallets as they can be easily used for hygienic applications, excellent performance in extreme heat or cold, lightweight construction permits easy handling by one person, and their accurate constructions allows their use in ARS systems.
Metal pallets were designed as an alternative to wood and plastic pallets to advance and solve problems with modern manufacturing methods.
