Some key features of Nichrome Resistance Wire Cr20Ni80/80Ni20Cr/NiCr8020 include:
Nickel (Ni): 80% (provides excellent resistance to oxidation, high-temperature stability, and electrical resistivity).
Chromium (Cr): 20% (enhances oxidation and corrosion resistance, particularly in high-temperature environments).
Iron (Fe): Small amounts (balance), adding to the alloy’s strength and workability.
Other Elements: Trace amounts of silicon, manganese, and carbon for improving fabrication and strength.
Oxidation Resistance: The 20% chromium content helps form a protective oxide layer at elevated temperatures, making the alloy highly resistant to oxidation in high-temperature environments, up to around 1100°C (2012°F).
Thermal Cycling Resistance: With its ability to withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles, it is ideal for use in applications that experience constant thermal fluctuations, such as electric furnaces or heating elements.
High Electrical Resistivity: Due to its high nickel content, NiCr8020 offers high electrical resistivity, making it suitable for resistance heating applications where consistent resistance is necessary.
Stable Resistance: The alloy maintains stable electrical resistance even under varying temperature conditions, making it ideal for resistive heating and thermocouple applications.
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: The chromium content significantly improves the alloy’s ability to resist oxidizing atmospheres, as well as sulfidation and scaling in high-temperature environments.
Scaling Resistance: Forms a protective oxide layer that prevents scaling, which would otherwise reduce the material’s life in high-temperature furnaces or heaters.
Tensile Strength and Ductility: Offers good tensile strength at elevated temperatures, as well as sufficient ductility to allow for drawing into wire, strips, and coils.
Work Hardening: The material may work-harden during cold working, which is common in high-strength alloys, and may require post-fabrication heat treatment to restore its ductility.
Weldability: Can be welded using standard techniques like TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, though welding should be done carefully to avoid embrittlement or cracking in the heat-affected zone.
Formability: It is easily drawn into wires and coils, making it versatile for use in heating elements, resistors, and furnace components.
