Downstems are a component of the bong. The downstem is a glass stem that connects the bong bowl, to the bong itself. Typically they are made out of borosilicate glass and have a few little slots cut into the bottom of them. These little slots provide diffusion for your rips. The whole purpose of a bong is to diffuse your rip. Introducing air into the water filters the smoke from your rips. This whole process cools your rip down making it a much smoother experience.

The downstem is a part of the bong that often gets forgotten about... until it breaks that is.
