A cooling tower is a heat removal device that cools water vapor to a lower temperature of water and removes waste heat from the system to the atmosphere. Cooling towers may use evaporation to release heat from the water vapor and cool the working fluid to near wet bulb temperatures, or they may be "closed-loop dry cooling towers" that use only air to cool the working fluid to near dry bulb temperatures. Common applications for cooling towers include the cooling of circulating cooling water in many plants, including oil refineries, petrochemical and other chemical plants, thermal power plants and nuclear power plants. Smaller cooling towers are also used to cool air in buildings. Cooling towers can be categorized by the way they allow air to enter the tower: the main categories are natural convection and forced convection cooling towers.
