The chambray is made by interweaving one of the warp and weft yarns with dyed yarn and the other with bleached yarn. Because it is suitable for young people's clothing, it is called chambray, also called labor cloth and student cloth. The predecessor of this fabric can be traced back to the French Cambrai (1595, Cambrai, also the source of the word Chambray) centuries ago, but its real popularity is attributed to the US Navy after World War II. At first, chambray work shirts worn by the U.S. Navy were mostly spun with roving. The colors were medium blue and dark blue, which matched the jeans perfectly.
Nowadays, chambray is no longer a single roving yarn-dyed fabric imitating the denim style. Different combinations of yarn counts, changeable textile technology, and novel design ideas have greatly expanded the use of chambray. While versatile, it still occupies an unshakable place in the mainstream fashion.
