Tie-dyeing generally takes cotton white cloth or cotton-linen blended white cloth as raw materials. The main dyes come from the blue indigo solution of natural plants such as Isatis indigotica, Isatis indigotica, and Mugwort that grow on Cangshan, especially Isatis indigo.
The Isatis root used for dyeing cloth is wild in the mountains. It is a perennial herb and has small pink flowers. Later, when the amount is large, the people who dye the cloth grow their own on the mountain. The good ones can grow to half a person's height. After harvesting, first soak it in water, pour it into a large wooden dyeing vat, add some lime or industrial alkali, and then use it to dye cloth.
The tie-dye production method is unique. The old book vividly describes the ancients’ crafting process of tie-dyeing: “Take the thread and tie it, then dye it. If it is dyed, the knot will be solved. The knots are all the original colors, and the rest are dyed. It's stained, and it's colorful."
The main steps of tie-dyeing include drawing patterns, twisting, soaking, dyeing, steaming, drying, stitching, rinsing, and grinding, etc. The two main processes are tie-dyeing and dip-dyeing. The key technology is the twisting technique and Dyeing skills. Dyeing vats, dyeing rods, drying racks, stone mills, etc. are the main tools for tie-dyeing.
