This Fiberall 4 fiber ports and 1 LAN port switch (fiber media converter) is a converging switch. What's the difference between a convergent switch and a core switch?

A core switch is not a type of switch; it is a switch locates at the core layer (the backbone part of the network). The converging layer switch is a gathering place for multiple access layer switches. The convergence layer switch and the core switch are different in functions, features, parameters, scenes, and so on.

1. Functional differences: The main function of core switches is to route selection and high-speed forwarding, providing an optimized and reliable backbone transmission structure, so the core layer switch is with higher reliability, performance and throughput. The converging layer switch is a convergence point of multiple access layer switches. The function is to unify the access nodes, and also to forward and select the route. It must be able to handle all traffic from the access layer device and provide the uplink of the core layer.

2. Performance differences: The core switch should be a three layer switch with high speed forwarding, large capacity interface bandwidth (such as a megabyte interface) and a large backboard processing capability. The converging layer switch needs high forwarding performance and is usually three layer switches. When designing and planning the network, the core level equipment has higher requirements for redundancy, reliability and transmission speed, so the core layer devices usually account for most of the investment.

3. Application difference: For core switches or converging switches (fiber media converter), there is no fixed application requirement, which depends on the scale of the network environment and the forwarding ability of the device. Not each network must have these three structures.
