Fiber media converter is a flexible and effective photoelectric conversion device. It plays an important role in multi protocol hybrid LAN. It supports many kinds of data transmission protocols, such as Ethernet, fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, DS3/E3 and so on. Now, in order to better discover and exclude link failures, some optical transceivers also have link fault transfer (LFP) and remote fault (FEF) alarm functions.
Link fault transfer (LFP) refers to two connected communication devices (fiber media converter, switches, routers, etc.). One (near end) has link failures, and link failures can be transferred to another remote device. For example, two fiber media converter A and B, LAN port of A media converter is with link failure, it will transfer the fault to optical port and the fiber port will stop sending data; fiber media converter B can not receive data from A and we will know there is link fault with A fiber media converter and B stop sending data on both fiber port and LAN port. Link fault transfer (LFP) alarm function enables network administrators to quickly learn and deal with network failures and reduce the loss caused by network failures.
Most fiber media converters (optical transceiver) are used in pairs, in fact, media converter with link failover (LFP) and fault alarm function (FEF) fault alarm function should be used in pairs, so the link failover (LFP) and remote fault alarm function (FEF) can play the biggest role.
Because different manufacturers and different types of fiber media converter is with different protocols to activate the link failure transfer (LFP) and remote fault alarm function(FEF) , so it is better to use same type media converter produced by the same manufacturer.
