G.652 fiber is Single-mode fiber,its core diameter is generally 9μm or 10μm, and its total dispersion is zero at 1310nm wavelength. From the loss characteristics of optical fiber, 1310nm is a low loss window of fiber, so the 1310nm wavelength becomes an ideal window for fiber communication, and another window is 1550nm. The main parameters of 1310nm conventional single-mode fiber is determined by the International Telecommunication Union in ITU-T G652 Recommendation, so the conventional single-mode fiber is also named G652 fiber.

ITU-T divided G.652 fiber into four types , including G.652.A, G.652.B, G.652.C and G.652.D, the classification of the four kinds fiber is mainly based on PMD (dispersion) requirements and attenuation requirements at the 1383nm.

G.652.A fiber is used to support 10Gbit/s system and transmission distance is up to 400km; 10Gbit/s Ethernet transmission is up to 40km and transmitting distance of 40Gbit/s system is up to 2km.

G.652.B must be used in 10Gbit/s system which transmission distance can reach more than 3000km and also can be used in 40Gbit/s system which transmission distance is up to 80km.

G.652.C is with basic properties as G.652A, but the attenuation coefficient is lower at 1550nm, and it also eliminate the peak of water absorption near 1380nm, which means that the system can work at 1360nm~1530nm.

G.652.D is with almost same property as G.652B fiber, and the attenuation coefficient is same as G.652C fiber, which means that the system can work at 1360nm~1530nm. But the absolute absorption peak fiber G.652.D is more strict than the PMDQ of G.652.C fiber.
