Since light travels at different speeds in different materials, light from one substance to another can produce refraction and reflection at the interface of two substances. What's more, the angle of refracted light varies with the angle of the incident light. When the angle of the incident light reaches or exceeds a certain angle, the refracted light disappears and the incident light is reflected back, which is the total reflection of light. The refraction angles of different substances are different for lights at same wavelength (that is, different substances have different refractive index), and the same, same material has different refraction angles at different wavelengths. Optical fiber communication is based on the above principles.
Bare optical fiber is generally composed by three layers: the center is high refractive index glass core (core diameter is generally 50μm or 62.5μm for MMF and 9μm for SMF), the middle is low refractive index silicon glass cladding (diameter is generally 125μm), the outside is resin coating for strengthen purpose.
Not all light incident on the end of the optical fiber can be transmitted by the optical fiber, but only the incident light in a certain angle range can be transmitted. This angle is called the numerical aperture of optical fiber. If the numerical aperture of optical fiber is larger, it will benefit for fiber matching. The numerical aperture is different from different manufacturers.
