Fire Test And Fire Performance Of Fiber Optic Jumper And Pigtail
As we know, OFNR or OFNP is flame etardant mark for fiber optic jumper, they are with better fire performance than PVC and LSZH.
In the United States, Canada, Mexico and other North American countries, fire rating for copper cable is divided into four grades, CMX, CM, CMR, CMP and the fire rating of fiber cable is divided into three grades, OFN, OFNR, OFNP . These are specified in the UL standard, the CMR (OFNR) level is allowed to be used in the vertical trunk cable, CMP (OFNP) level is allowed to be direct laying in the ventilation pipe, and do not need to put into wire casing. CM (OFN) and CMX can be used for general cabling environments.
The international Europe standard defined low smoke halogen LSZH cable, the key point is the cable sheath material does not contain halogen, the smoke is low and with low toxicity when it is burning and the sight is not affected so people has a short time to escape. There are two standards, one is IEC332-1, flammability is quite similar to the North American CMX level cable, and the other is IEC332-2, flammability is equivalent to CM (OFN) level.
Low smoke halogen free substrates are polyolefins, which have a high fuel content, so they have to be mixed with metal hydrate fillers to inhibit their flammability, but when the water of hydration is exhausted, combustion may happen.
Under the same condition, fire spread speed is the same for bare CMX and LSZH cable, but there is no open fire for CMP (OFNP). CMX/T combustion test is to burn the CMX level cable which already put into metal pipe , the flame resistance is better than exposed cable . So put the cable into metal pipe during cabling is a good solution to higher the flameproof ability.
