Advantage and disadvantage of PON Passive Optical Network

 

PON is a pure passive network, there is no active device in the network so it can avoid electromagnetic interference and lightning influence from the external equipment, and it also reduce the failure rate of the circuit and the external equipment, improve the reliability of the system, and reduce the maintenance cost.

 

PON service is with excellent transparency and wide bandwidth so it can be compatible with any signal in different format and rate, including analog broadcast television service.

 

Since the office equipment and optical fiber (from the feeder section to the access line) are shared by users, the length of optical fiber cable and number of transceivers is less, so the cost is less than other point-to-point communication mode, the construction cost also be significantly decreased, especially with the project of fiber to the user is pushing forward, its comprehensive advantage will be more and more obvious.

 

But the one-time investment cost is high. The optical line terminal (OLT) is expensive, and the optical fiber, fiber splitter and other passive components must be used at the same time. so at the early construction, if the users is few or the distance among users is over a limit, the cost for per user will be very high cost and the tree topology also bring high cost for protection.
