Spiral blade and ground screw anchordescription
(1) For 14" (36cm) diameter foundation anchors, reduce allowable capacity by 20% per building code requirements. Not applicable to HS.
The nature of the proposed application usually gives a clue to the soil type. By determining the soil classification using geotechnical surveys or the Chance Soil Probe and a knowledge of the expected loads it is possible to decide on the most suitable anchor. In general the 60 round HS screw piles are for soils class 4 to 8.
The SS150 and SS175 square anchors and 89 round HS anchors work with soils from 8 to 3 and the rock version of the 89 round screw pile will penetrate soils up to class 1. Specific rock anchors perform well in class 0 soils but require a pre-drilled hole.
A wide range of termination components are produced to connect the pile to the load.
Class 1 soils are difficult to probe consistently and the ASTM blow count may be of questionable value
** It is advisable to install anchors deep enough, by the use of extensions, to penetrate a Class 5 or 6, underlying the Class 7&8 soils.
The column ‘probe values’, refers to torques measured using the Soil test probe available from ABC. This kit enables a single operator to perform a practical test to help determine anchor configurations and performance.
In general standard anchors can be used in soils from Class 8 up to Class 4. Rock anchors will give excellent results in Class 1 & 2 soils. However when subjected to tension loads care must be taken to ensure adequate depth of soil over the highest helix.
It is essential that regular testing of installed anchors is used as a back up to torque monitoring. This is the only way to ensure that installers and specifiers maintain confidence in the system. ABC can supply test equipment for quality control and insist on its use by qualified installers..

When To Spiral blade and ground screw anchor
Screw piles are be fabricated in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, depending on the proposed application and the likely soil conditions to be encountered. At present, most helical pile shafts range in sizes from 1.25” to 2.00” square, and from 2.875” to 10.75” diameter hollow round. The sizes of helices typically range from 6” to 14” diameter. Maximum ultimate pile capacities (not including skin friction) range from 34 to 150 kips. To provide higher capacities, larger helical pile shafts and helices will be required.
Methods of connecting the pile to the structure depend on the type of structure to be supported. Connections can range from complex welded brackets to holes drilled into the top of the pile. The major consideration for this connection is to assure that there is a clean transfer of load from the structure to the pile.

FAQ
Q: What are screw piles?
A: Screw piles are an increasingly popular and remarkably effective deep foundation option. Each screw pile is composed of a steel pipe shaft with a 45° cut at the bottom and two or more formed helical plates welded outside.
Q: How do screw piles work?
A: Imagine using a power drill to advance a screw into a block of wood. Now imagine using a hammer to drive a nail into that same block of wood. The “thread” or helix on the screw pile allows it to be turned into the ground with impressive speed and accuracy and without the noise and vibrations associated with a pile driver. The addition of the helix also dramatically increases bearing capacity and pull-out resistance making screw piles a good option for deep foundations such as transmission towers, as well as lighter load projects such as decks or fences.
Q: Are screw piles safe?
A: Absolutely. Screw piles are recognized as a safe and effective foundation by the Deep Foundations Institute and in the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual.
Q: What differentiates screw piles from other foundation options?
A: Screw piles are the fastest, most flexible and environmentally-friendly foundation options available. Installing a screw pile doesn’t require any pre-excavation and there is no need to dispose of tailings. There is no time-consuming wait for concrete to cure and there are no noisy pile drivers or cumbersome cement trucks to deal with.
